Knitted Kitchen #16 – Brick Stitch

The Brick Stitch washcloth is pattern #16 in the 2017 Knitted Kitchen Blog Hop. This square uses a type of colorwork where you only work with one color on each row, and slip stitches are used to carry one color up into the next. The pattern includes written and charted instructions, plus a video tutorial.

The Knitted Kitchen Blog Hop is a knit-along event hosted by the Underground Crafter, and I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of it. Together with a great team of designers and will be bringing you 48 washcloth patterns throughout the year. Each pattern will include a photo and/or video tutorial, so it’s a fun way to learn new stitches and techniques.

Brick Stitch Washcloth

Materials:

• Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn
  • 60 – 110 yds A (Cafe au Lait)
  • 40-70 yds B (Taupe)
• Size 6 (4mm) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge
• Yarn needle

 

Abbreviations used:

• k = knit
• p = purl
• sl = slip purlwise with yarn at wrong side of work
• RS = Right Side
• WS = Wrong Side

Stitch multiples:

• Smaller square shows a multiple of 6 plus 5 stitches for initial cast on. Larger square shows a multiple of 6 plus 7.
• Each square has a multiple of 6 rows. The pattern section is a 6 row repeat, plus 2 extra rows, and there is a seed stitch border of 5 rows on each side.  The total number of rows should be as close as possible to 2 * (# of cast on sts + 6).
• For side borders, pick up 1 stitch for every 2 rows, plus one for the cast on edge and one for the bind off edge. This should be fairly close to the number of cast on stitches plus 6.

Cast on 41 [55]

Note: When slipping a stitch (including for the selvedge), always do so purlwise, with the yarn held at the wrong side of the work. Right side rows will always start with a knit, and wrong side rows will always start with a purl. 

Seed stitch bottom border:

Row 1 (WS): With A, p 2, (k 1, p 1) across to last st, sl 1.

Row 2: (K 1, p 1) across to last st, sl 1.

Rows 3-5: Repeat rows 1-2, then repeat row 2 once more.

Main section of square

Row 6 (RS): With B, k to last st, sl 1.

Row 7: P to last st, sl 1.

Row 8: With A, k 2 [3], (sl 1, k 5) 6 [8] times, k 1 [2], sl 1.

Row 9: P 1, k 1 [2], (sl 1, k 5) 6 [8] times, k 1 [2] sl 1.

Note: Twist the yarns over each other at the edge to help carry them up neatly. If you do it after the first knit stitch, it will be hidden behind the selvedge. 

Row 10: K 1, p 1 [2], (sl 1, p 5) 6 [8] times, p 1 [2] sl 1.

Row 11: Repeat row 9

Rows 12-85 [115]: Repeat rows last 6 rows 12 [17] times more, then repeat rows 6-7 once more.

Seed stitch top border:

Row 86 [116] (WS): With A, k to last st, sl 1.

Rows 87-90 [117-120]: Repeat rows 1-2 twice.

Bind off.

Seed stitch left and right borders:

With A, and with right side facing, pick up 47 [62] sts along one side edge.

9″ square only – Rows 1-5: Repeat as for rows 1-5 of top border.

12″ square only:

Row 1 (WS): With A, p1, (k 1, p 1) across to last st, sl 1.

Row 2: K 1, (p 1, k 1) across to last st, sl 1.

Rows 3-5: Repeat rows 1-2, then repeat row 2 once more.

Bind off.

Repeat this section for the other side edge.

Weave in ends.
